Chapter 10

1- Walt is a very intelligent man, who once worked at NASA. Chris as we know was a very smart kid too, being placed in advanced classes due to high testing scores. It seems that Chris received his fathers smarts. “ In the third grade, after receiving a high score on a standardized achievement  test, Chris was placed in an accelerated program for gifted students.” page(106
2-Walt and Chris both liked to be adventurous. The two of them liked going on camping trips together.  “Later we bought a airstream trailer and traveled with that.Chris loved those trips,  the longer the better. There was always a little wanderlust in our family, and it was early on that Chris had inherited it” page (108) Walt explains.

Chapter 11

1- When Chris was little he always wanted to be by himself and found ways to play by himself. He. “He could be alone with out being lonely.” page (107) Chris liked being with his friends, but found that being by himself he liked better. I believe thats why he took his trip by himself so he could be in the wilderness, where he liked to be, and be himself with no one with him.
2- When zChris and his dad wen’t on their backpacking trip, Chris would always follow his dad up to where he would climb to. Chris always wanted to go to the highest point he could get to.“Chris was fearless when he was little, he says...he didn’t think the odds applied to him. We were always trying to pull him back from the edge.” page (109) When people know that Chris is planning to go on trips, they try to make him change his mind and not go on the trips, because its not something they would do. He was fearless and knew what he could handle, so he never listened.

Chapter 4-5

Chris’s freedom is the ability to travel and be himself the way he wants to be. I believe Chris gets his freedom from traveling the country, and experiencing the wilderness. I don’t think Chris was to be settled in one particular place, he likes being able to just pick up what he has and continue on down the road, to some new adventure. I think that Chris was able to find happiness while traveling around the way he did.

I think that Chris means plastic people are fake and different from himself. People who are fake try to be somebody that they really not. Money and food are the two things Chris find “plastic”. I agree with his assessment of the money part. You don’t need money to happy, yes it helps to get somewhere but it come and it goes. There are other ways that Chris make up for not having money. I think Chris should have reassessed food. Food is a necessity, you need enough to survive. Rice was not going to cut it for Chris. “ He was reliable, though, a body that showed up everyday, so they didn’t dare fire him. They only paid four twenty-five an hour, and with all the casinos right across the river starting people at six twenty-five, well, it was hard to keep bodies behind the counter.” page (40) Chris didn’t really value money like some people do. Some people rely on having money, money makes them happy.

Chapters 103

1- Fearless: Brave; unafraid. Chris in my opinion is a very fearless kid, leaving what he had, for nothing in the middle of the wilderness. He knows what he has in store, but is still will to face the elements and danger of traveling into the middle of no where with very little supplies.
2- Self-Sufficient: Able to take care of oneself. Self-sufficient fits Chris pretty well, because he is leaving his friends and family behind, to go on his journey, and rely on no one but himself. He believes in himself, thinking that he has the skills and knowledge it takes to survive in the wilderness.

I agree with his motivation to leave everything he had, and to start something new, and earn what he has. Chris is a fearless and self-sufficient person, he don’t want to be ruled by his parents. Chris feels his journey to Alaska is his chance to be who he really is.
